William W. Hammill, MD
William Hammill was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1961. He is licensed to practice medicine and surgery in the Commonwealth of Virginia and received his board certification from the American Academy of Pediatrics in Pediatrics and Pediatric Cardiology. Dr. Hammill is the Director of Cardiopulmonary and Vascular Services at Martha Jefferson Hospital and an Associate Professor in Pediatric Cardiology at the University of Virginia. Dr. Hammill received his undergraduate degree from Wofford College in South Carolina and his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. He completed his pediatric residency at the Medical University of South Carolina and his pediatric cardiology fellowship at the University of Virginia. Following completion of his training, he was on active duty with the United States Navy. Bill served in the military for 15 years (4 years active duty and 11 years reserve duty). In 1998 he returned to Charlottesville as a pediatric cardiologist at UVA. In 2003 he took the job as Director, Cardiopulmonary and Vascular Services at Martha Jefferson Hospital. He is the director of the Cath Lab, Interventional Radiology Lab, Cardiology Care Center, Health and Wellness, Wound Care, Vascular Ultrasound, Respiratory Care and Sleep Medicine. He continues to teach in the first and second year basic science program for the medical school at UVA and has teaching sessions with the residents and fellows through patient care interactions. His clinical interests include pediatrics, pediatric cardiology, exercise physiology and resuscitation.
Dr. Hammill began his volunteer work with the American Heart Association in 1980 as a CPR instructor. Dr. Hammill's involvement in the field of resuscitation and with the AHA has been extensive and includes the following:

Dr. Hammill has been involved with the development of the 2000 and 2005 International Consensus on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC) Science and Treatment Recommendations as well as the 2000 and 2005 American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care. He helped develop a new course in Pediatric First Aid for the AHA and help revise the current Heartsaver First Aid course. He also has been instrumental in the growth of web-based education for the AHA with the development of a web-based CPR and First Aid course.
Dr. Hammill has chaired and presented for national meetings and received awards from the American Academy of Pediatrics, Emergency Medical Services, Emergency Cardiovascular Care, American Heart Association, American Occupational Health, and the Naval Medical Center. He has received numerous teaching awards, and has received research grants from the Medical University of South Carolina Health Science Foundation, American Heart Association, and Nestle Beverage Company.
Dr. Hammill has published in the Journal of the South Carolina Medical Association, American Heart Journal, American Journal of Cardiology, Clinical Pediatric Medicine, Journal of Adolescent Health, Journal of the American Society of Echocardiography, Elsevier Science Publishers, and Covepoint Encyclopedia of Congenital Heart Disease.
Dr. Hammill resides in Charlottesville, Virginia with his wife, Cam, and their four children.
